3rd Age University

The Slovenian Third Age University is a non-profit voluntary educational organisation for the elderly and run to some extent by the elderly. Our programme is for people over fifty who want to explore new educational areas and develop their abilities, for personal and professional reasons. The University was founded in 1986 upon an initiative of experts in adult education and the very first students. The University was a major break through in Slovenian adult education stimulating the emergence of many other important educational initiatives, i.e. study circles network, community education, active citizenship, etc.

Main targets

  • integration of the elderly in the society,

  • stimulating social responsibility,

  • creating opportunities for transmission of knowledge and reciprocal learning,

  • setting up new structures for elderly experts to share their knowledge,

  • encouraging the role of elderly people in local development (active citizenship),

  • contributing towards better understanding elderly people and old age

Fields of activities

  • educating the elderly,

  • educating mentors, teachers, professionals who work with elderly,

  • educating university students,

  • educating elderly workers,

  • pre-retirement education, education for fourth age,

  • educational and cultural tourism,

  • designing new programmes,

  • research, development and consultancy,

  • constituting a specialized library,

  • publishing,

  • organizing public lectures, conferences, round tables, EU projects.
